MEDICOLEGAL WORK​
Dr Patel has an expanding portfolio in medicolegal work as a cardiology expert witness. He is able to produce timely expert reports for both claimant and defendant.
​
He has undergone extensive training including webinars led by Medical Protection Society (MPS) on 'redefining the expert witness' and 'experts in the dock: live cross examination of a clinical expert'. He is one of the few cardiologists in the United Kingdom to hold a Diploma of Legal Medicine (DLM) with Distinction from the Faculty of Forensic & Legal Medicine (FFLM). Dr Patel currently acts as a clinical advisor on the University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) Clinical Ethics Committee with case discussions on a weekly basis. He also regularly receives correspondence from the DVLA to review applications for re-licensing.

Dr Patel is a panel member of the Faculty of Expert Witnesses (FEW). He is happy to review documents in hard copy or electronic format and is versed in reviewing medical records on secure online portals. He is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (reference: ZB554732), has a secure nhs.net e-mail account for confidential communication and is able to convey/distribute paperwork via encrypted e-mail for full GDPR compliance.

Dr Patel's work may include the following:

Review of the formal letter of instruction

Scrutiny of the patient's medical records

Assessment of a patient directly in clinic (with travel if required)

Review of cardiac tests when performed (including ECG, exercise tolerance test [ETT] and Echocardiogram)

Arranging adjunct investigations when indicated (at HCA The Harborne Hospital or Circle Priory Hospital, Birmingham)
-
Production of a detailed report (typically within 6-8 week timeframe)
